Class Description
In photos and paintings we are shown close and distant views of objects and scenic views of great distances; a train disappearing towards a distant tunnel, a winding nature trail with large trees looking smaller on a further sloping hill side. All this presented to us on a flat surface of paper or canvas.
A challenge for a relief carver is how to give this illusion of distance within a certain thickness of wood... say only a 2" thickness of wood!
In this immersive two-day class, you'll discover the tricks and techniques needed to turn a shallow block of wood into your own portal to another dimension.
You will learn about wood grain direction, safe use of hand-held and power tools, about 2 or 3 point perspective drawing of your own idea (or select from provided achievable options), on how to transfer your image to a 12" x 8" x 2" basswood block and how to plan your carving and which tools to use to realize your vision.
For beginners to perspective carving, you will learn safety techniques of all carving tools available including handheld gouges and power tools, keeping tools sharp in usage, and the methodology of design implementation.
For intermediate and advanced carvers, be prepared for new challenges in this design concept, and to have any questions about tools and techniques answered or refined.
